Reflections In My Mind

Bio

I am a photographer on a journey to explore and capture the many moments life has to offer.  From my early years my pictures would show various interest to the diversity in life, to a moment in a child’s life to just things that most people pass by without taking time to see the beauty and the simplicity that life can present.

Since I was a little boy when I received my first point and shoot camera from Santa, I starting seeing life in a different perspective.  I remember onetime, only days after Christmas my family and I went to the Science Museum in Buffalo, NY.   It was a cold and a snowy day.  After we left the building on our way to the parking lot, there was a stonewall, dark gray, at least 60 years old, with rod iron spikes on the top of the wall.  I remember looking up, seeing a dark and gray sky, snow and ice on top of the rod iron, with the limbs of the tree over shadowing the wall, covered in ice.  I thought it was beautiful.  There was a peace and grace to this look that I saw.

From that time on, I could not get a camera out of my hands.

In most recent years, when I started to capture people, first starting out with cultural events, family groups, to children playing, street life and then later models, I friend and a former model once stated my work was a reflection of my fantasies.  He was so blunt about it that I was taken aback.  He was right!  I saw myself in many of the pictures I took.  I played both roles in my mind:  model and photographer creating art for others to enjoy.

My primary inspiration to take photos of models was because of my wife.  Prior to our marriage, my wife modeled for Ford Agency when Eileen Ford ran the company.  During that time, she had a private affair with a Doctor who helped her grow as a woman.  During this time, he had a photographer take photos of her, which by today’s standards are considered to be artistic.  They were beautiful pictures.  When she grew into her forties, these pictures where sold all over the world in a form of posters and post cards.  Her youth is now forever captured in time and this is why I take the type of pictures that I do.

Most everything I see in my daily life, is a picture.  What I see on a daily basis is all about art and life in a form of a picture.  I wish to capture only the beauty of life and to give others a sense of the best that this world can offer.

Now days I have journeyed into photographing fitness and fashion models, capturing and supporting their journey and their passion of being a model.  Also I am on a journey to support the many companies to share their brand and vision of beauty.

Regardless of the body  type of a person, beauty is beauty.  Here an ASU student wanted pictures done for fun.  We were on our way down to the waterfront when I saw the sunlight on her hair.  I immediately had her stop moving to capture this natural pose.  When developing a portfolio, you need to look natural and not posed and stiff.  I have known many of serious models take acting lessons to achieve this look.

Fitness

The human body is the best work of art.  There is nothing more beautiful, dynamic and artistic in capturing someone who has given them self to a purpose of fitness.

There are opportunities for both catalog and editorial work. If you work out a lot, have good muscle definition and have good flexibility, then this might be a good shoot to set up.

When I shot Jeffery, He had just finish a competition and was in fantastic shape.  This pose was done in my home studio.  Jeffrey, in good humor stated he never smiles when having a photo taken of him, he never wears tight athletic gear, and never takes off his socks.  Here you don't see him smile, however in other photos I had him smile by just talking with him, getting him relaxed.  If you want good photos taken of you, you have to put aside your insecurities, and allow the photographer to connect with you, and to challenge your mindset.

Portraits

G+14.jpeg

Traditional Portraits:  Usually taken in a Studio depicting a visual representation of that person.  The subject is expected to be looking directly at the camera.  This can be a head-shots, two thirds of the body or a full body framing.

Head-shots:  Headshots can be used to assist you in getting closer to your career goals.  Such as using your photos for business cards, comp cards for models, or for ones’ personal goals.

Fashion Photography

Contrary to commercial photography, the emphasis in fashion photography does not lie on the garments, but on the mood and styling of the image. The garments are merely an accessory to convey a certain lifestyle. Therefore, the whole image is much more complex. You usually won’t see plain white or off-white backgrounds in fashion photography and the models are usually styled very dramatically with thick eyeliners, dramatic eye shadows, etc. With the increased complexity in styling also comes an increased complexity in lighting to make the image look more dramatic. While many commercial photographers only stick with one light for the model, fashion photographers tend to use a wide array of lights and lighting accessories. When doing a fashion shoot, However sometimes you may see up to seven lights to get the dramatic look that that the photographer wants.   That is not to say that a dramatic look can not be achieved with only one light, such as a beauty dish or an octabank – it’s about the effect of the lighting and not about how many lights you use to get that effect.

This picture was taken at the Hotel Valley Ho Resort in Scottsdale, AZ, for a tuxedo shoot.  After reviewing this picture, I realized I should of had a female or a male model sitting down where the dinnerware is placed, waiting to have their dessert.   And that model on the table would of been the dessert. That would of added more depth and complexity to this picture.   Now I am not saying that this is not a good picture to use for advertising, I am just saying I feel that another model here would of added more to the viewing experience.   This journey of being a photographer is always a never ending learning experience.

Artistic Photography

Nude Photography:  The body is a beautiful work of art.  Artistic photography is an expression of you as an individual and will help you get in touch with your natural self.  It is not about your perfect or imperfect body, it is an expression of your raw and natural beauty, personality and sensuality with nothing covered and nothing hidden.

Does he look familiar?  We took this shot just before the tuxedo pictures were taken.  I never push any model to pose nude.  However this model and I have known each other for a while and have done shoots before.  We talked prior to the shoot about taking this shot.   I was married to a wonderful woman, Beverly, who has since past on.  She modeled with Eileen Ford when Eileen ran her agency.  During that time, she had an affair with a doctor who had a professional photographer take beautiful artistic photos of her. If Eileen had found out, my wife to be would of been fired.  Nudity back then was not allowed for public viewing.  However years later when artistic photos started become the norm for public viewing, the photographer contacted my wife and asked if he could sell those pictures as posters. Years later she made money from her youthful beauty, and the youthful beauty is forever captured. The reason for taking pictures of athletic people is because of this picture you see below.

Story Telling

Lifestyle:  The emphasis is given to suggesting the style of the living of the individual depicted.  Weight is given to communicate the feeling of life experience of the subject.  Lifestyle images evoke emotions in viewers by depiction of desired life styles.  Also lifestyle photography can be for those looking to add more dimensions in their life.

Boudoir

Boudoir Photography:  Boudoir is a French word for a woman’s private room or bedroom.  In photography, it could be a bedroom, a hotel or somewhere that creates an intimate setting for classy and romantic images.  Every women deserves an opportunity to bring out her inner and outer beauty to reflect the most flattering poses that fit her body type.

Editorial Photography

Editorial

If you’ve ever seen a picture that illustrates an article in a magazine, that was an example of ‘editorial’ modeling. All types of models are needed and in general, there are no height or weight restrictions. All you need to do is ‘fit’into whatever the art director envisions.

Editorial photography is very similar to fashion photography in the sense that editorial photography is usually not about selling a product but something greater. In fashion photography it’s the lifestyle, in editorial photography it’s the story or the theme.  As with fashion photography, the proper lighting is of utter importance. Let’s say you are shooting an editorial about a girl traveling. If the story is about the joy and the happiness, you would of course use very friendly and open lighting to emphasize this mood. If on the other hand the story is about the dangers of traveling, your lighting would be much more dramatic and instead of a beach on a sunny day, you may choose darker lighting.

Black & White Photography

B & W :  Try and describe the feelings black and white photography evokes and you'll come up with words like classic, bold, raw, and natural. Then ask the person next to you and he or she might say something completely different. The beauty of black and white photography is that it can take on whole new different meanings depending on what it is you're shooting or who it is you ask.

As all photography was originally monochrome, or black and white, it's easy to feel a sense of nostalgia over them. Today, many modern day photographers choose to shoot or post-process in black and white, creating striking photos like you will see here.

Whether it's capturing the texture of an object or seeing the form, shading, pattern or tone, black and white photography will give you a greater appreciation for life's little details. By taking away color, you'll see an object without distractions.

After shooting this model with his tux on, we were in the process of getting ready for another look.  He had his shirt off and took the fruit bowl from the table he was just on and said "lets' do something with this."  He put it up to his face and together we captured this picture.  The metal you see here was the fruit bowl.  I love it when a model has ideas.  Together we work as a team.
